Microsoft is expanding its Xbox ecosystem beyond the console, though the company remains committed to console development with ongoing service integration and updates. This comes after recent leadership changes, including the departure of Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond, but the core objectives remain consistent, according to Xbox Wire.
The February update showcases Microsoft’s continued investment in cloud gaming, bringing improvements to Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, the ROG Xbox Ally, PC apps, and web browsers. The overarching goal is to create a platform that allows players to enjoy games wherever and however they choose, a strategy that remains unchanged despite recent executive shifts.
A key feature of the update is the introduction of 1440p streaming for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers on console. Previously available on PC apps, PC-based handhelds, browsers, and select televisions, Cloud Gaming on consoles was limited to 1080p. The new 1440p resolution, paired with an increased bitrate, is now available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One X, and Xbox One S, aiming for sharper visuals and more responsive gameplay. This upgrade signals the growing capabilities of cloud gaming technology and its potential to deliver a near-native experience.
Microsoft has similarly announced that Xbox Cloud Gaming has officially exited its beta phase. This transition signifies the service is considered stable and mature enough for continued development and improvement, potentially alongside advancements in future Xbox console generations and server hardware upgrades, though those are still years away.
ROG Xbox Ally continues to improve with each update. The ROG Xbox Ally is also receiving several updates based on user feedback. Users can now format external storage directly from the Xbox app, including official SanDisk microSD cards, a process that was previously cumbersome. The Advanced Shader Delivery Indicator provides on-screen feedback during game loading, indicating whether shaders have been precompiled for faster startup times and reduced stuttering.
The update also expands Xbox Play Anywhere titles to include Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and MIO: Memories in Orbit. The number of games available for streaming from a user’s library has surpassed 1,000 with the addition of titles like Gears of War, Mordhau, High on Life 2, and Reanimal, with more titles like Ghostrunner 2, Slay the Princess, and Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster planned for release.
