Xbox Mode Coming to Windows 11 PCs | April Update

Microsoft is officially bringing its “Xbox mode” to Windows 11 PCs in April, promising a more integrated gaming experience between its console and computer ecosystems. The company announced the feature will be rolled out to all users as part of a broader update.

The move is seen by many as a foundational step for Microsoft’s Project Helix, a platform aiming to emulate the console experience on PC hardware using the Xbox Full Screen Experience. This signals Microsoft’s continued effort to unify its gaming platforms.

Users within the Microsoft Insider program have had access to the feature for several months. For the wider Windows 11 user base, Xbox mode will function as a console-like experience, optimizing the PC interface for controller use and integrating typical console functionalities directly into the computer.

The underlying technology powering the feature is similar to that found in the ROG Xbox Ally, the portable PC developed in collaboration between Microsoft and ASUS. Microsoft is refining the solution, particularly in the area of performance, with the introduction of Advanced Shader Delivery intended to deliver a smoother and more responsive experience.

The immediate focus for the feature is on PCs dedicated to gaming. A key question surrounding Xbox mode is whether it will offer enough robustness and versatility to compete with established solutions like Steam Big Picture.
