Microsoft Details Next-Generation Xbox, ‘Project Helix,’ and Expanded Windows Integration
Microsoft unveiled plans for its next-generation Xbox console, codenamed “Project Helix,” and a broader integration with Windows during its keynote address at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) on March 11, 2026. The announcements signal the company’s continued commitment to the gaming market, even amidst recent leadership changes and speculation about its future direction.
Project Helix is designed to play both Xbox and PC games, aiming to deliver leading performance and usher in a novel era of console gaming. According to Jason Ronald, Vice President of Next Generation at Xbox, the console is powered by a custom AMD SoC and co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technologies. This collaboration with AMD is intended to unlock advancements in rendering and simulation, with the console delivering “an order of magnitude leap in ray tracing performance and capability.”
The company also announced that an “Xbox mode” will begin rolling out to Windows in select markets starting in April. This feature will bring a familiar Xbox experience to Windows users while maintaining the flexibility and openness of the operating system. The move reflects Microsoft’s strategy to bridge the gap between its console and PC gaming ecosystems.
Microsoft highlighted the growth of its Xbox Play Anywhere catalog, which now spans more than 1,500 games. This allows players to seamlessly access their games across both console and Windows platforms, creating a wider reach for developers. The company emphasized the importance of developers, noting that over 5,000 developers worldwide are currently building for Xbox.
These announcements come after a period of transition for Xbox, following the retirement of former gaming boss Phil Spencer and the appointment of Asha Sharma as the new Xbox CEO. Recent reports had questioned Microsoft’s long-term commitment to gaming, but Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella last week affirmed that the company remains “long on gaming” and will continue to invest in the sector. Further expanding the Xbox ecosystem, Lenovo has confirmed that the Xbox Full Screen Experience will soon be available on Legion Go devices, with initial testing already underway. Notebookcheck.nl reports that this integration will enhance the handheld gaming experience.
