Yamaha is introducing a new generation of its NMAX 155 Tech Max scooter for 2026, featuring a technologically advanced transmission and integrated navigation. The updated model, which is already generating buzz in Southeast Asian markets, brings the “Turbo” technology – officially called YECVT (Yamaha Electric Continuously Variable Transmission) – to Europe, according to recent reports.
The core of the upgrade is the YECVT, an electronically controlled transmission designed to offer improved performance and fuel efficiency in urban environments. Unlike traditional CVT systems that rely on pulleys, the YECVT utilizes a DC motor to provide two riding modes: Sport, for enhanced acceleration, and Town, for smoother operation and reduced fuel consumption. The system also incorporates a Downshift function that simulates the experience of downshifting a conventional gearbox.
Yamaha’s proprietary Blue Core technology ensures the 155cc engine meets Euro5+ emissions standards while achieving fuel economy of up to 98 mpg. The engine also features variable valve actuation, a new crankcase, crankshaft, hydraulic cam chain tensioner, oil pump, air cleaner, and exhaust system. An automatic engine stop/start function further conserves fuel at red lights, automatically restarting when the throttle is twisted.
The 2026 NMAX 155 Tech Max produces just under 15 horsepower at 8000 rpm and a little over 10 lb-ft of torque at 6500 rpm. Weighing 298 pounds, the scooter boasts approximately four inches of suspension travel at both ends, IRC SS tires on 13-inch aluminum wheels, and ABS-enhanced 230mm disc brakes with hydraulic calipers.
Beyond the powertrain, the scooter includes keyless operation, LED lighting, a USB-C charging port, and under-seat storage. A two-piece LCD and 4.2-inch TFT dash provides riders with information and smartphone connectivity via the Yamaha MyRide app. The app adds Garmin Navigation capabilities, along with data acquisition and social features.
While pricing starts at Rp33 million (approximately $2,100 USD), it remains unclear whether the 2026 Yamaha NMAX 155 Tech Max will be imported into the United States. The scooter’s advancements in transmission technology and connectivity features position it as a competitive offering in the urban mobility market, potentially influencing trends in scooter design and functionality. Yamaha details the features of the new model on its European website.
