Sofia is preparing for the provocative return of Neil LaBute’s “The Shape of Things,” with the official city premiere scheduled for April 16 at the City Mark Art Center.
Directed by Kristiana Boyadjieva, the production features a powerhouse lead pairing of Yana Marinova and Yordan Rasin. The ensemble cast likewise includes Yana Kuzova and Teodor Papazov, bringing LaBute’s sharp exploration of human dynamics to the stage.
The play delves into the tension between form and content, posing critical questions about the cost of success and the moment that cost becomes higher than one is willing to pay. This thematic exploration has mirrored the real-life reflections of star Yana Marinova, who recently opened up about the psychological toll of the industry. In a candid discussion, Marinova revealed that at one point she decided to “kill” her former self to evolve.
Reflecting on the nature of early achievement, Marinova noted that when “successes” occur extremely early and effortlessly, they eventually must be paid for with a “backdated” cost.
The production’s ability to provoke deep introspection has already been evident during its tour. On February 14, the play was performed in Hamburg, Germany, drawing dozens of theater enthusiasts and young Bulgarians. Marinova observed that the direct interaction with teenage audiences following the performances revealed how early young people begin making compromises with their values, the truth, and their own identities.
As the production prepares for its Sofia debut, “The Shape of Things” is expected to bring the same level of provocative dialogue to the local stage this April.
