Aden, Yemen – A surge in cholera cases in Yemen, with over 249,900 suspected infections and 861 deaths reported since the beginning of 2024, represents 35% of the global cholera burden and 18% of reported fatalities, according to recent data.

The ongoing outbreak is fueled by economic hardship and inadequate access to clean water and sanitation, posing a significant public health threat, particularly to children. Cholera, a bacterial infection spread through contaminated water, can be life-threatening if left untreated.

In May 2024, a $3 million intervention funded by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid & Relief Centre (KSrelief) was launched to combat the spread of the disease and provide life-saving care. This funding has been instrumental in supporting critical healthcare facilities.

Facilities like the Al-Mualla Diarrhea Treatment Center in Aden Governorate have become vital in the fight against cholera, offering free and timely care to vulnerable communities. The quick access to treatment is crucial in preventing severe complications and fatalities.

For Rami Ibrahim Omar Hassan, a 28-year-old father from Aden, the support arrived at a critical moment. His two young daughters, ages 10 and 6, suddenly developed severe diarrhea and vomiting. A rapid response project to combat cholera was launched at Aden International Airport in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health and Population and other organizations.

The King Salman Humanitarian Aid & Relief Centre’s (KSrelief) efforts have so far provided services to 18,815 individuals, demonstrating a significant impact on the ground. KSrelief funding is saving young lives in Yemen, according to the World Health Organization.
