YouTube is expanding the features available with its lower-cost subscription tier, Premium Lite, bringing capabilities previously reserved for the full Premium plan to a wider audience. The update introduces background play and download functionality for most videos within the app.

The company is too enabling Premium Lite subscribers to download “most” YouTube videos for offline viewing. These downloaded videos can then be watched without an internet connection. Both features were previously exclusive to those paying for the more expensive Premium subscription. Restrictions apply to certain content, including music videos, which will remain ad-supported even with a Premium Lite subscription.

The improvements to YouTube Premium Lite are initially rolling out in the United States, with other markets expected to follow in the coming weeks. Google confirmed to one publication that the update will be gradually released in Germany “from now on,” though the changes are not yet reflected in the German documentation or on the subscription pages.

The price of YouTube Premium Lite will not change with the addition of these features. Subscribers will continue to pay $7.99 per month for the entry-level YouTube subscription. The full Premium subscription costs $13.99 per month – more than double the price of Lite. Discounted rates are available for students ($7.50 per month) and for annual subscriptions ($130, or $10.80 per month). A YouTube Premium family plan, covering up to six users, costs $24 per month.

Following these improvements, the primary difference between the two subscription tiers centers on advertising. Whereas YouTube Premium is completely ad-free, YouTube Premium Lite will continue to display advertisements during some content, including music videos, Shorts, and videos found through search.

YouTube originally introduced Premium Lite in 2021. The service was briefly discontinued in 2023, with existing subscribers receiving cancellation notices. However, Google announced the return of Premium Lite last year, and We see now available to all users in Germany.
