Authorities are investigating a series of intentional acts of vandalism along a popular hiking trail in Taiwan, raising safety concerns for visitors. Multiple safety ropes along the Yanzui Mountain trail have been cut or loosened, creating potentially dangerous conditions for hikers.
The incidents, which have been occurring repeatedly, have prompted warnings from the Forestry Bureau’s Taichung Branch, urging hikers to exercise extreme caution. Officials are calling the rope tampering a deliberate act of sabotage.
One incident in April 2025 resulted in a hiker sustaining injuries after falling due to a severed rope. The individual responsible was convicted and sentenced to four months in prison, according to reports. Despite the conviction, the vandalism has continued, with at least 28 ropes along the 650-meter trail recently found to be compromised.
One individual claimed to have cut the ropes out of a professed love for trees, according to local media. Yet, authorities are treating the incidents as serious safety threats. The deliberate cutting of the ropes creates what some are calling “perfect murder traps,” as a fall could be fatal.
The Forestry Bureau is increasing patrols and urging hikers to be vigilant while using the trail. The case highlights the potential for intentional acts of sabotage to endanger public safety in recreational areas.
