Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy Shares Personal Bond With Mother Amid Wartime Pressures
In a rare glimpse into his private life, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has opened up about the essential role his mother plays in providing emotional support as he navigates the immense burdens of leading a nation at war.

During an interview on Alastair Campbell’s program “Leading,” Zelenskyy discussed his relationship with his mother, Rimma, who is a retired engineer. Despite the crushing weight of his duties, the President revealed that he maintains contact with her nearly every day.
Zelenskyy admitted that while he often attempts to initiate the calls, his demanding schedule can cause him to forget. This frequently leads to what he describes as a “phone marathon” if he fails to pick up. “If I don’t answer, I have a problem!” Zelenskyy joked, noting that he may receive 10 or even 20 consecutive calls from her, concluding that it is simply “better to answer the first one.”
Such personal disclosures highlight the human dimension of leadership during national crises, illustrating how private family ties can serve as a critical psychological anchor for leaders managing extreme, prolonged stress.
Beyond these family details, the conversation with Campbell also addressed the current state of the war and the complexities of international politics.
