A 17-year-old girl was still alive when she was thrown into a canal following an assault, according to initial findings from an autopsy.

“Zoe Trinchero was still alive when she was thrown into the canal,” stated forensic pathologist Alessandra Cicchini, who conducted the initial autopsy on the body of the 17-year-old found dead in Nizza Monferrato on the night of February 6th. The death is being investigated as a homicide committed by 19-year-old Alex Manna, who allegedly struck her during an argument. Further analysis is underway, but the determination regarding the “fall trauma” appears to be conclusive. Despite being punched by Manna, Zoe was reportedly still breathing when she was thrown into the Rio Nizza from a height of approximately ten feet.

Friends: “Alex was crying over her body, we believed him”

Manna reportedly wept over the young woman’s body in an attempt to deceive friends who were searching for her. He had also allegedly made a prior attempt to contact the girl two weeks before the incident. This information was shared on the Italian program *Storie Italiane* by two young men who discovered the body. “She was down there in the canal, there was a lot of water. On the ground there was a phone, glasses, and scattered cigarettes. We immediately went down and moved her as her head was in the water. We already knew there was nothing more we could do,” they said.

“As soon as we saw her, we said ‘That’s Zoe.’ She had injuries on her face and appeared swollen, maybe from hitting her head when she fell,” they continued. “We picked up the phone and called 112.” The friends described Manna’s behavior at the scene: “He was there with us, he went down to cry over her and shout ‘It’s my fault I didn’t save her, I left her alone.’ Unfortunately, we believed him, but he was lucid, trembling, and continued to cry. He immediately blamed a man of color, who almost faced a mob attack if the police hadn’t taken him away.”
