SNL Opens with Mock NYC Mayoral Debate Amidst National News Cycle

Saturday Night Live opened with a fictional debate between candidates vying for the New York City mayoral seat, providing a comedic take on current events as the nation grapples with a continuing federal government shutdown, cuts to food stamp programs, the final game of the World Series, and upcoming elections in several states.

The cold open, which aired yesterday, featured cast member Kenan Thompson portraying New York newsman Errol Louis, who quipped, “Why would you want the worst job in the world?” Host Miles Teller played former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, referencing past controversies with the line, “I know this city like the back of a women’s back.” Shane Gillis appeared as Republican candidate and Guardian Angel CEO Curtis Sliwa, while Ramy Youssef portrayed front-runner Zohran Mamdani.

Youssef’s Mamdani delivered a pitch geared towards younger voters, stating, “Once you vote for me, you know you’ll feel a little less bad about that chicken and rice shop getting turned into a Sweetgreen, so why don’t you hit me up on the ballot box, girl?” The sketch also included a cameo from James Austin Johnson as Donald Trump, who declared, “this election is about housing and taxes, but we all know it’s about me, right?” and launched into a rendition of a song from *The Phantom of the Opera*. This year’s midterm elections are considered pivotal for both parties as they look ahead to the 2024 presidential race.

The episode also featured musical guest Brandi Carlile, marking her third appearance on the show. Next week’s show will be hosted by Nikki Glaser with musical guest Glen Powell. Saturday Night Live is currently in its 51st season and has announced plans for Thanksgiving and Christmas specials later this year.

NBC officials have not commented on whether the topical nature of the cold open was a direct response to the numerous ongoing national and international news stories.
