A demonstration in Zurich on Saturday, organized in observance of International Women’s Day, devolved into chaos as participants blocked traffic and vandalized property, according to reports. The event underscores growing tensions surrounding demonstrations and public order in the city.

Approximately 1,000 women took part in the unauthorized march, with around half actively disrupting traffic on Paradeplatz by using ropes to block trams. Others defaced a UBS branch, tram shelters, and public spaces with paint, police said.

Police initially maintained a hands-off approach, allowing the demonstration to proceed as long as it remained peaceful. However, the situation escalated as participants began to engage in destructive behavior.

The demonstration too served as a platform for advocacy related to Iran and Palestine, with participants voicing support for activists in those regions. The event differed from previous Women’s Day demonstrations, with many participants wearing masks and setting off fireworks.

The demonstration bore little resemblance to traditional marches for equality, with observers drawing comparisons to more confrontational protests like those associated with May Day.

As the demonstration continued, police determined that the situation was no longer peaceful and responded with rubber bullets, tear gas, and water cannons. Organizers had intentionally refrained from seeking a permit, viewing the process as “a repressive instrument of the state.”

The events raise questions about the intent of the demonstration, as it appears to diverge from the original United Nations goals of promoting women’s rights and world peace when the day was first established in 1975.
