China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has announced an upward adjustment to domestic fuel prices, effective May 8, 2026, at midnight. The move, detailed in an official price adjustment notice, sees the price of standard gasoline rise by 320 yuan per ton and standard diesel increase by 310 yuan per ton.

The adjustment reflects the ongoing sensitivity of domestic energy costs to global market fluctuations. According to a expert analysis on the price regulation, the hike is driven by the pricing mechanism that mandates adjustments every 10 working days based on a basket of international crude oil averages.

Dong Xiucheng, Executive Dean of the China International Carbon Neutral Economy Research Institute at the University of International Business and Economics, noted that while international crude prices have seen some recent declines, the average price over the 10 working days prior to this adjustment remained higher than the average from the previous cycle. This volatility underscores the challenges of maintaining price stability amidst shifting global supply and demand dynamics.

For consumers, the price hike translates to a retail increase of approximately 0.25 yuan per liter for 92-octane gasoline. This trend is evident in regional pricing. for instance, updated retail prices in Jiangxi province indicate that 92-octane gasoline will be priced at 8.67 yuan per liter, 95-octane at 9.31 yuan and 0# diesel at 8.46 yuan starting May 8.

The notification regarding the price increase serves as a critical update for logistics and transport sectors, which remain highly exposed to diesel price swings.

In other regulatory developments, authorities in Qinghai province have announced reductions in agricultural machinery subsidies. The cuts specifically target subsidies for total mixed ration preparation machines and residue film recovery machines, reflecting a shift in regional agricultural support priorities.
