2026 World Cup Qualifying: Europe Results & Playoff Hopefuls

The race to qualify for the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup is intensifying, with European qualifying wrapping up tuesday and 12 teams confirming their spots in the 48-team field.This marks the first World Cup with nearly double the previous number of participants, fundamentally altering the landscape of international soccer competition. While customary powerhouses like England and France have secured their places, others, including Denmark, now face a challenging playoff route to reach the tournament hosted jointly by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

European World Cup qualifying concluded Tuesday night, with 12 nations securing their spots in the 2026 tournament. A further 12 teams, along with four from the Nations League, will compete in March for the remaining four qualifying places.

Denmark suffered a major setback in November, drawing with Belarus before a stunning 4-2 defeat to Scotland on Tuesday. That result sent Scotland directly to the World Cup, while Denmark now faces a playoff route. The field of twelve group winners is now complete.

European teams already qualified: England, France, Croatia, Portugal, Norway, Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Belgium, and Scotland.

European teams still in contention: Italy, Denmark, Turkey, Ukraine, Poland, Wales, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Republic of Ireland, Bosnia, Albania, Kosovo, Romania, Sweden, North Macedonia, and Northern Ireland.

The draw for the European playoff tournament will take place on Thursday. Four more teams will emerge from the playoffs to join the qualified nations. A total of nine spots remain open for the 2026 World Cup.

Africa: Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, Ghana, Cape Verde, South Africa, Ivory Coast, Senegal

Asia: Japan, Jordan, Iran, South Korea, Uzbekistan, Australia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia

South America: Argentina, Ecuador, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Colombia

Host Nations: United States, Canada, Mexico

Oceania: New Zealand

The qualification process is heating up as teams across the globe vie for a place in the first-ever 48-team World Cup, promising a wider range of competition and exciting matchups. With the European playoffs looming, the stakes are high as several strong contenders battle for a coveted spot in the tournament.
