Data breaches and cyberattacks continue to compromise the personal information of internet users at an alarming rate. In February 2026, a hacker consolidated information from various sources into a single database and made it available on the dark web. While the situation requires careful consideration, the hacker’s actions have brought a significant security risk to light.
At Least Three Billion Email Addresses Exposed
Operating under the pseudonym Adkka72424, the hacker uploaded a 150 GB database on February 1st, claiming it contains over 6.8 billion unique email addresses. The hacker reportedly spent two months building the database, expanding upon a collection of 3.3 billion email addresses obtained two years prior, by extracting data from various sources including previously compromised databases and malware attacks.
Analysis by Cybernews researchers – who previously revealed a massive exposure of 16 billion identifiers in the summer of 2025 – indicates the database actually contains “only” 3 billion email addresses, with the remainder consisting of duplicates or invalid addresses. However, this number remains substantial, particularly as the hacker may also possess more sensitive data, such as passwords.
“However, that does NOT indicate it’s over.”
In a post accompanying the data release, Adkka72424 stated the intention was to draw the attention of security expert Troy Hunt and to alert internet users. “I have bad news: those to whom you entrusted your data did not protect it well and your data is now public,” the hacker wrote. Despite releasing the data, the hacker then encouraged users to change their passwords on vital sites and enable two-factor authentication.

Caution remains advisable, especially given the increasing ease with which phishing campaigns can be launched and made credible as more personal data becomes readily available online.
