At least five people were killed and several others injured in a shooting during an illegal cockfight in central Mexico, authorities said.

The violence erupted late Wednesday night in the Valle Dorado 2000 neighborhood of Corregidora, Querétaro, after a dispute over gambling escalated into gunfire at a clandestine cockfighting event.

Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots and called emergency services. Municipal police arrived to find four people dead at the scene and provided medical aid to the wounded, who were transported to local hospitals.

Later, the Querétaro state prosecutor’s office confirmed that a fifth victim died while receiving treatment, raising the death toll to five. At least seven others were injured in the exchange of gunfire.

Officials said the confrontation began as an argument between attendees over bets placed during the fight. Police have launched a full investigation to identify those responsible and are reviewing evidence from the site.

The incident has drawn attention to the persistence of illegal cockfighting rings in the region, despite being prohibited under Mexican law. Authorities continue to process the scene and interview witnesses as part of the ongoing inquiry.
