Jakarta – Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority (OJK) revoked the licenses of seven Rural Banks (BPR) and rural Sharia Banks (BPRS) throughout 2025, citing financial distress linked to fraud and inadequate risk management. The closures, announced today, represent a continuation of oversight efforts aimed at stabilizing the nation’s banking sector, notably within the vital rural banking network that serves smaller communities and businesses [[1]]. OJK officials maintain these actions are proactive steps to safeguard the broader financial system and protect depositors.

Seven Indonesian banks closed their doors in 2025, all of which were Rural Banks (BPR) and Rural Sharia Banks (BPRS), according to regulatory authorities.

Dian Ediana Rae, Head of Banking Supervision at the Financial Services Authority (OJK), explained that the licenses of these institutions were revoked due to capital issues and poor performance stemming from fraudulent activities.

“The BPRs and BPRSs whose licenses were revoked by OJK in recent years experienced problems and poor performance due to fraud and/or inadequate application of governance principles and prudence,” Rae stated during a press conference following the monthly meeting of the OJK Board of Commissioners on January 9, 2026.
