“HE EXPERIENCED BREATHING DIFFICULTIES”
Sabahat Aydoğdu explained that Kaan developed normally until age three, walking and talking like other children. The challenging situation began abruptly one morning when he woke up with difficulty breathing. “Kaan Ege is 7 years old. Until he was three, he was developing normally, able to walk. One day he woke up with breathing difficulties. He was urgently transferred to another hospital, and that’s where we learned he had Boca virus. The virus directly attacks the lungs and causes respiratory distress, which is why my son was intubated,” she said.
VIRUS SYMPTOMS CAN BE MISSED
Aydoğdu emphasized that the virus’s symptoms can be easily confused with the flu, potentially leading to delays in diagnosis. “We didn’t know the symptoms of the virus, so there were oversights. My son spent 18 days in intensive care, and during that time, he lost his ability to walk and speak,” she stated. This underscores the importance of accurate and timely diagnosis in managing viral infections.

The family has been undergoing intensive treatment for four years, according to Aydoğdu. “He receives physical therapy and nutritional counseling. He once had a feeding tube, but it’s been removed, and he now eats by mouth.”
“IT SHOULDN’T BE MISTAKEN FOR A COMMON COLD”
Aydoğdu stressed that the virus should not be dismissed as a simple cold. “It shouldn’t be mistaken for a common cold. The symptoms are similar, but it attacks the lungs and can even cause cardiac arrest. I want families to be aware,” she said. Early recognition of symptoms is crucial for effective management of the virus.
The mother noted that her son continues to develop, offering a hopeful outlook. “They told us he would never walk or eat again, but my son receives two hours of physical therapy each week. He can now sit up with support and is taking steps. His cognitive abilities have improved significantly. He couldn’t even speak, but now he says ‘Mom.’ I believe that with good treatment, he can continue to improve,” she concluded.
