A formal celebration marking the 800th anniversary of the Dominican Order’s presence in Vienna will take place January 28th, featuring a special Mass and a lecture on the life and work of Saint Thomas Aquinas.
The Dominican Order in Vienna will commemorate its 800th anniversary with a traditional celebration of Saint Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. Aquinas, who joined the Order of Preachers in 1244, is considered a foundational figure for the Dominicans.
Pope John XXII canonized him on July 18, 1323, and Pope Pius V declared him a Doctor of the Church on April 11, 1567. Later, Pope Leo XIII named Aquinas the patron saint of all Catholic universities and schools on August 4, 1880.
The festivities will begin at 6:00 PM with a solemn Mass in honor of Saint Thomas Aquinas at the S. Maria Rotunda Dominican Church in Vienna. The principal celebrant and homilist will be Father Thomas Brogl OP, Socius (Assistant) to the Master of the Order for Europe, Rome. Musical accompaniment will be provided by the choral scholars from the Church Music Department of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
Following the Mass, at approximately 7:15 PM, Professor Dr. Dr. Thomas Marschler, Chair of Dogmatics at the University of Augsburg, will deliver a lecture titled “Sharing the Fruit of Contemplation: Thomas Aquinas and the Dominican Ordinal Ideal” in the Thomas Hall of the Dominican Monastery (entrance is through the garden gate to the right of the main monastery entrance), Postgasse 4, 1010 Vienna.
