A recent visit by soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo to Washington D.C., including a meeting with former President Donald Trump, has sparked a playful political response. The White House shared a video of Trump and Ronaldo, labeling them both “GOATs”-an acronym for “Greatest of All Time”- prompting a TikTok counter-response from the Democratic Party featuring rival Lionel Messi [[3]]. Ronaldo’s trip coincided with a visit from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and the Portuguese athlete publicly thanked Trump for the hospitality [[1]].
The post comes a day after the White House released a video of Trump and Ronaldo walking together with the message “two GOATs.”
The Democratic Party responded to a recent White House video featuring former President Donald Trump and Cristiano Ronaldo with a TikTok post showcasing Lionel Messi.
The TikTok video highlights iconic moments from Messi’s career with Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and the Argentinian national team, including footage from his eight Ballon d’Or awards ceremonies.
Ronaldo and his partner, Georgina Rodriguez, stayed at a luxury hotel just a block from the White House during their visit.
“Thank you, Mr. President, for the invitation and the warm welcome you and the First Lady gave to my future wife and me. Each of us has something significant to offer, and I am ready to do my part as we inspire new generations to build a future defined by courage, responsibility, and lasting peace,” Ronaldo stated in a social media post.
The Portuguese star previously expressed interest in meeting Trump during a recent interview with British journalist Piers Morgan, on November 6: “He’s one of the people I want to meet, I would like to have a good conversation with him. I like him a lot because he’s one of the people that makes things happen.”
Since arriving in Saudi Arabia in January 2023, Ronaldo has actively promoted the country, and the meeting with the former American leader coincided with Mohammed bin Salman’s first official trip to Washington in seven years.
Cristiano Ronaldo became the third Portuguese athlete to make an official visit to the White House, following marathon runner Carlos Lopes, a gold medalist at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics who was received by Ronald Reagan, and basketball player Neemias Queta, a champion of the North American Basketball League (NBA) with the Boston Celtics, in 2024.
