Indonesia national team coach John Herdman has expressed respect for Dean James’ decision not to join the squad for their upcoming match against Saint Kitts &amp. Nevis. Herdman confirmed he will not call up a replacement for the player.

James was initially named to the 24-man Indonesian roster for the match against Saint Kitts & Nevis at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Friday, March 27, 2026. However, he was subsequently removed from the team.

The removal came amid a passport issue in the Netherlands, where James is still registered as a player for Go Ahead Eagles.

NAC Breda protested James’ appearance in a recent 0-6 loss to Go Ahead Eagles, arguing that he was ineligible to play as he should have been registered as a non-EU player following his Indonesian naturalization.

Speculation surrounding James’ absence had been circulating, with Dutch media outlet De Sentor reporting that he was sidelined due to illness.

Herdman reiterated his respect for James’ decision and stated he remains welcome on the national team in the future.

The coach emphasized his complete focus on the current squad and has no plans to seek a replacement for James.

“I consider Dean has made his statement, and I think it’s always vital to listen to players,” Herdman said during a press conference ahead of the Saint Kitts & Nevis match. “My focus this week is on this group of players. Dean is a fantastic player, a big part of our family, a big part of our squad and will continue to be in the future. He’s made his statement for this camp, he has his own reasons.”

“For me, the focus since Monday, since Sunday, since three weeks ago, since January, has been about delivering these four days at a level and standard that these players deserve. We have a group here that has really embraced a new mindset and hopefully they’ll show that in the game.”

“Regarding a replacement player, I’m pretty comfortable with the group we have. We have a excellent squad here now. Everyone has arrived, everyone is healthy,” he added.
