Gaza Ceasefire Breached: Rising Deaths & Aid Concerns – October 2024

The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas is facing a critical test as clashes resume in the Gaza Strip, threatening to unravel a fragile agreement reached just over a month ago. Recent reports indicate a surge in violence, with both sides accusing the other of violations, and raising concerns about a further escalation of the conflict that began October 7, 2023. As of today, November 20, 2025, the situation remains volatile, with mounting casualties and a deepening humanitarian crisis within the territory.

Gaza’s fragile ceasefire is facing increasing strain as Israel continues military operations within the territory, resulting in a rising number of Palestinian casualties. The escalating violence threatens to derail efforts to transition to a second phase of the agreement, raising concerns about a further deterioration of the humanitarian situation.

According to reports from the Palestinian Civil Defense, Israeli forces committed eight violations of the ceasefire since dawn on Thursday, resulting in the deaths of three civilians and injuries to 15 others. The breaches come after a particularly deadly Wednesday, when hospitals in Gaza reported 29 Palestinians killed and over 77 injured due to airstrikes targeting areas in Gaza City and Khan Younis.

The Gaza Ministry of Health stated that 33 Palestinians have been killed in the 24 hours leading up to Thursday, including 12 children and eight women, with an additional 88 wounded. Since the ceasefire began on October 11, 2023, the ministry has recorded a total of 312 fatalities and 760 injuries, alongside 572 recoveries of bodies from the rubble.

The overall death toll from the Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip, which began on October 7, 2023, has reached 69,546, with 170,833 reported injuries. The ministry warns that the true number of casualties is likely higher due to the ongoing collapse of the healthcare system and difficulties in accurately assessing the situation.

Fears of Expanded Targeting

Intense activity from Israeli warplanes was observed in the skies over southern Gaza on Thursday, fueling fears of a widening military operation. Smoke plumes were seen rising near the Bader school in the Shuja’iyya neighborhood of Gaza City following an explosion caused by the Israeli military detonating an explosive device. Ground operations have also continued, with reports of residential homes being demolished east of Gaza City.

The Israeli military announced it had launched attacks on Hamas targets throughout the Gaza Strip, claiming the actions were in response to attacks on its forces in the Khan Younis area. Hamas has denied these claims, accusing Israel of using them as a pretext for targeting civilians.

“Hamas”: Israel is Moving the Yellow Line

Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem accused Israel of deliberately violating the ceasefire agreement by consistently shifting the “yellow line” westward, leading to mass displacement of Palestinians. “This change to the yellow line violates the maps agreed upon in the ceasefire agreement,” Qassem said, calling on mediators to pressure Israel to halt these violations immediately. The development underscores the precarious nature of the ceasefire and the potential for further escalation.

Qatar Condemns “Brutal” Israeli Attacks

The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned what it described as “brutal” Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip on Thursday, stating they represent a dangerous escalation that threatens to undermine the ceasefire. The ministry emphasized the need for regional and international efforts to preserve the agreement and ensure its full implementation.

“Full commitment to the ceasefire paves the way for ending the war on Gaza and achieving just and sustainable peace in the region,” the ministry added, stressing the international community’s responsibility to stop violations and protect civilians.

Petition Regarding Gaza Patients

Human rights organizations submitted a petition to the Israeli Supreme Court on Thursday, demanding that Israel resume the immediate medical evacuation of patients from the Gaza Strip to hospitals in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The organizations – Physicians for Human Rights, Gisha, the Legal Center for the Individual, Adalah, and the Association for Civil Rights in Israel – stated that approximately 16,500 people in Gaza, including children, the elderly, and women, are at serious risk of losing their lives due to the lack of available medical treatment.

The organizations emphasized that the healthcare system in Gaza has completely collapsed since the start of the war, and that Israel, as the controlling authority over the crossings and the sole power to authorize medical evacuations, bears direct responsibility for preventing patients from accessing life-saving care. The petition highlights the dire humanitarian consequences of the ongoing conflict and the urgent need for medical assistance.
