A member of the West Virginia National Guard was fatally shot Wednesday in Washington, D.C., and another critically wounded, prompting an immediate security lockdown and bolstering of troops in the nation’s capital [[1]]. The shooting occurred near 16th Street and Constitution Avenue NW, approximately two blocks from the White House, raising questions about security protocols in the heavily guarded area. The incident marks the first on-duty death of a National Guard member in the District of Columbia as the January 6th,2021 Capitol attack and underscores the risks faced by service members deployed to urban centers [[2]].

A member of the National Guard was fatally shot in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, and another was seriously wounded, prompting a heightened security response in the nation’s capital. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges of security in major U.S. cities and the potential for violence even in highly protected areas.

President Donald Trump announced the death of the fallen service member: “Sarah Beckstrom of West Virginia, a very respected, young, and magnificent person who began her service in June 2023, remarkable in every way, has just left us. She is no longer with us,” Trump explained in a televised message.

According to the President, the other soldier who was shot “is fighting for his life.” “He is in very serious condition. He is fighting for his life, and we are hoping for better news about him,” Trump said.

Promise of Punishment for Shooter

“The animal who shot the two National Guard members, both seriously wounded and now in two different hospitals, is also seriously wounded, but regardless, he will pay a very high price,” President Trump wrote Wednesday on the Truth Social platform.

Vice President JD Vance also reacted to the shooting.

The decision to reinforce security in the nation’s capital with an additional 500 troops was made late Wednesday, according to Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth.

“This happened just steps from the White House and will not be tolerated. That’s why the President asked me – and I will ask the Secretary of the Army and the National Guard – to add another 500 soldiers, National Guard members, in Washington,” Hegseth stated.

National Guard soldiers have been stationed in Washington since August, when President Trump ordered patrols in the streets as part of a controversial immigration and crime-fighting policy.
