Indonesian Airport Under Scrutiny Amid Allegations of Illegal Mining Exports and Migrant Trafficking

An airport in North Kalimantan, Indonesia, is facing increased scrutiny following allegations of facilitating both illegal mining exports and the entry of undocumented migrant workers. The airport, known as the Industrial and Port Airport of Mentarang (IMIP), has had its permit for direct international flights revoked as authorities investigate the claims.

The controversy began with suspicions that IMIP was being used as a gateway for the illicit shipment of natural resources. According to reports, authorities are investigating whether the airport was utilized to export illegally sourced minerals. Simultaneously, concerns have surfaced regarding the potential use of IMIP as an entry point for undocumented migrant laborers.

On November 27, Indonesia’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation revoked IMIP’s permit to operate direct flights to and from international destinations. This decision comes as the government investigates the allegations and seeks to ensure compliance with regulations.

President Joko Widodo addressed the situation, stating that he was not the one who officially inaugurated the airport and distanced himself from any potential impropriety. “What is not good, don’t drag me into it,” Widodo said, according to CNN Indonesia.

Members of the Indonesian Parliament have called for a thorough investigation into the operations of IMIP. They have urged Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto to investigate the airport’s activities, particularly the lack of oversight. BeritaSatu.com reported that lawmakers are concerned about the potential for illicit activities to go unchecked.

The status of IMIP remains “illegal” pending the outcome of the investigation, according to republika.co.id. The situation underscores the Indonesian government’s commitment to combating illegal activities and ensuring the security of its borders.
