Newly crowned Miss Universe stands firm amidst controversy, declaring she “deserves this crown.”

Ten days after being named Miss Universe, Fátima Bosch of Mexico is resolute. Despite ongoing debate surrounding her win and the transparency of the pageant, the 25-year-old model confidently asserts: “Yo me merezco esta corona” – “I deserve this crown.”

Bosch, originally from Teapa, spoke with journalist Jessica Carrillo for Telemundo’s ‘Al Rojo Vivo,’ where she was asked about potentially stepping down and relinquishing her title to quell the controversy. However, she firmly stated she sees no reason to do so.

“Of course not, because I deserve this crown and this sash,” Bosch explained. “The reality is that a lot can be said, but there is only one truth: I put in the same effort as all my colleagues, I made the same commitment, and we all went through the same trials… And I won. Why would I give up something I worked so hard for?”

She also described the questioning of her victory as “unfair,” particularly the criticism she’s received on social media, arguing that only she and those closest to her understand the dedication she poured into winning Miss Universe. The pageant world is often subject to intense scrutiny, and this year’s competition has been no exception.

“I’m 25 years old and I’ve never been in this environment before. Of course it hurts, because they attack my family and they attack me,” she said, her voice breaking with emotion. “When God puts a purpose in your heart, there will be a lot of adversity.”

Bosch clarified that she entered Miss Universe “for philanthropy and social causes.”

On November 20, Fátima secured the fourth Miss Universe title for Mexico, continuing a tradition of Mexican contestants wearing red during the competition – a detail now considered a lucky charm. She bested Miss Costa de Marfil, Miss Philippines, Miss Venezuela, and Miss Thailand, who finished as the first runner-up.

The 74th edition of Miss Universe began to generate tension even during the preliminary events. However, the resignation of judge Omar Harfouch, who alleged irregularities in the voting process, significantly escalated the situation. “I cannot stand in front of the public and the cameras pretending to legitimize a vote in which I never participated, it would be dishonest,” the Franco-Lebanese pianist wrote on social media.

Following Bosch’s win, Harfouch doubled down on his accusations, claiming that Miss Universe CEO Raúl Rocha pressured him to favor the Mexican contestant. “I was pressured a week ago in Dubai to vote for Fátima Bosch, because they need her to win, because it will be good for our business,” he told the Inquirer.

The Miss Universe Organization responded strongly, dismissing the claims as “false” and asserting that “all contest evaluations follow established, transparent protocols supervised by the MUO.” Rocha, for his part, denied the allegations, stating on Telemundo’s ‘Hoy Día’: “Harfouch’s statements are to get two minutes of fame.”

Further controversy arose with the resignations of other titleholders, including Miss Costa de Marfil and Miss Estonia, as well as additional judges and delegation directors. Social media users reacted harshly, not only criticizing the system but also targeting Fátima Bosch directly, prompting her to defend herself on Instagram.

“Today I want to raise my voice not as a beauty queen, but as a woman,” she wrote. “A woman who, like millions in the world, has experienced firsthand the violence that comes from hatred, misinformation, and the inability of some to see a woman shine without feeling threatened.”

Bosch didn’t simply denounce the harassment; she framed it as a matter of principle. “My victory is not a threat. My victory is a reminder that women are resilient, capable, and powerful,” she stated in another post. “We are not here to meet others’ expectations, we are here to transform the world.”

Amidst the media storm, widespread resignations, and accusations that her reign was predetermined, Fátima Bosch remains steadfast: “I won Miss Universe.”
