Vienna – Austria has transitioned to a fully digital highway toll system for 2026, eliminating the customary windshield vignette, but the change is already attracting the attention of online fraudsters. Authorities are now warning motorists to exercise caution when purchasing the digital “vignette,” as unauthorized websites are reportedly exploiting a built-in 18-day activation delay to scam consumers. The new system, while offering convenience, requires vigilance to avoid financial loss and potential data compromise, especially as the final year for purchasing the physical sticker nears.
VIENNA – As Austria’s new highway toll system takes effect, authorities are warning motorists to be vigilant against online scams targeting those purchasing the digital vignette. The shift to a fully digital system, while offering convenience, has opened new avenues for fraudulent activity.
Digital Vignette Launch Accompanied by Rise in Online Scams

Starting December 1, drivers can purchase the Austrian digital highway toll for 2026. The electronic version eliminates the need for physical stickers and simplifies the process for vehicle changes or windshield damage, but officials caution buyers to exercise extreme care when purchasing online. Reports indicate a growing number of unauthorized websites are exploiting the new system.
14-Day Cancellation Window Exploited by Fraudulent Sellers
The digital vignette isn’t immediately valid upon purchase. Consumers have a statutory 14-day right of withdrawal, meaning the toll doesn’t activate until 18 days after the online transaction. Unscrupulous sellers are leveraging this delay to defraud customers. Christian Koisser of the Austrian Chamber of Labour warns that numerous unauthorized websites are inflating prices or simply failing to deliver the vignette after payment.
“Anyone who falls for a fake online shop will lose their money, won’t receive the vignette, and also risks having their personal data misused,” Koisser emphasized.
Asfinag Website Remains the Most Secure Option
The most reliable way to purchase the digital toll is directly through the official Asfinag portal. The process involves entering the vehicle registration number, providing an email address, and selecting a payment method. However, it’s crucial to double-check the accuracy of the registration number entered – an incorrect entry will prevent the vignette from being properly linked to the vehicle, potentially resulting in a €120 penalty as a substitute highway tax.
Koisser also recommends utilizing the online validation function to instantly confirm whether a vignette is active for a specific vehicle and its expiration date.
Paper Vignettes Phased Out, But Still Valid for 2025
The annual vignette for 2026 costs €106.80 and must be active by February 1, 2026. Existing vignettes for 2025 remain valid until January 31, 2026.
Next year will be the last opportunity to purchase the traditional adhesive vignette, which will be red and must be affixed to the upper left corner of the windshield or near the rearview mirror. The sticker offers the advantage of remaining valid even if the vehicle registration number changes. This transition to a fully digital system reflects a broader trend toward modernization in European transportation infrastructure.
Immediate Activation Available Through ÖAMTC and ARBÖ
Drivers needing immediate activation can purchase a digital vignette in person at ÖAMTC and ARBÖ branches. This option bypasses the 18-day waiting period and is ideal for those requiring immediate use of Austrian highways.
