Vienna Startup Rankscale Targets ‘Paradigm Shift’ in AI-Driven Commerce

As traditional search engines face a potential obsolescence, Vienna-based startup Rankscale is introducing a specialized “AI-Visibility” solution to support brands navigate the transition toward AI-driven e-commerce.

The landscape of online shopping is currently undergoing what may be described as a paradigm shift. With artificial intelligence increasingly dominating the e-commerce sector—particularly in the United States—there are growing concerns that traditional search engines could suffer a fate similar to that of Altavista, eventually becoming relics of an earlier digital era.

To address this volatility, Rankscale provides tools that allow companies to monitor and optimize their presence within AI-generated results. The startup focuses on ensuring brands remain visible and recommended as consumers migrate away from traditional queries and toward conversational search interfaces.

This transition toward generative search represents a significant pivot for digital marketing strategies, as brands move from optimizing for keywords to optimizing for AI-driven recommendations.

The company has seen steady traction since its inception. In May 2025, Rankscale reported 500 users in its beta version. By May 4, 2026, the startup has expanded its reach to 700 customers. This growth includes a portfolio of high-profile clients such as Bosch, Rewe, O2, 1&1 and UBS.

Founded by Mathias Ptacek and Patrick Schmid, the startup initially launched by evaluating how companies were perceived and surfaced by platforms such as ChatGPT. The company’s current trajectory underscores a broader market necessity for global brands to adapt their visibility strategies to the generative AI era.
