Jakarta – The Indonesian rupiah showed fluctuating performance against the U.S. dollar on December 12, 2025, amid continued global economic uncertainty and shifting monetary policies. The currencyS movements reflect the sensitivity of emerging markets to interest rate decisions from the U.S. Federal Reserve and ongoing trade tensions. Analysts are currently predicting a narrow trading range for the rupiah as it navigates these complex economic pressures.

The Indonesian rupiah exhibited a mixed performance against the U.S. dollar on December 12, 2025, with analysts predicting continued volatility and a slight weakening trend. The currency is expected to trade in a range of Rp16,670 to Rp16,710 per dollar.

In trading on Thursday, December 11, 2025, the rupiah closed with a gain of 0.07%, or 12 points, reaching Rp16,688 per U.S. dollar, according to Bloomberg data. Simultaneously, the U.S. dollar index edged down 0.10% to 98.68. This movement reflects the ongoing sensitivity of emerging market currencies to shifts in U.S. monetary policy and global economic conditions.

Several other Asian currencies also strengthened against the dollar. The Japanese yen rose 0.01%, while the Singapore dollar, Philippine peso, and Chinese yuan gained 0.13%, 0.40%, and 0.12%, respectively. However, the Taiwanese dollar, South Korean won, and Indian rupee experienced declines, falling 0.21%, 0.20%, and 0.48%, respectively.

Contributing to the rupiah’s movements are recent decisions by the U.S. Federal Reserve and revisions to Indonesia’s economic growth forecasts. The Fed lowered interest rates to a range of 3.50%-3.75%, the lowest level in three years.

During a press conference, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell stated that policymakers need time to assess the impact of the three interest rate cuts implemented by the Fed this year on the U.S. economy. Powell added that officials will closely monitor incoming data ahead of the next Fed meeting in January 2026.

Domestically, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has lowered its economic growth projection for Indonesia to 4.9% for 2025, down from a previous forecast of 5%. The ADB also revised its 2026 growth forecast down to 5% from 5.1%.

The ADB attributed the downward revisions to high tariffs imposed by the United States, which are creating trade uncertainty and expected to weigh on growth. These trade tensions highlight the vulnerability of export-oriented economies like Indonesia to global trade policy.

The rupiah opened stronger on December 12, 2025, at Rp16,669 per U.S. dollar, according to Bloomberg data. This represents a 0.04% increase, or 7 points. At the same time, the U.S. dollar index rose 0.03% to 98.37.

Several Asian currencies also saw gains at the open. The Singapore dollar, Taiwanese dollar, and Malaysian ringgit all strengthened by 0.04%, 0.11%, and 0.11%, respectively. Conversely, the Japanese yen, Hong Kong dollar, South Korean won, and Philippine peso all weakened, falling 0.07%, 0.01%, 0.03%, and 0.22%, respectively.
