Ancelotti stated through the club’s official website that a clear penalty should have been awarded to Brazilian forward Vinícius Júnior.
“Vinícius went down quickly in front of the defender and there was contact. I’m very surprised that the referee didn’t go to VAR,” he added. “They didn’t even bother to check it, but that doesn’t surprise us, and we’ll move on.”
Vinícius himself echoed the manager’s sentiments, saying, “There was a clear penalty that wasn’t called because the foul was on me.”

Was Real Madrid Denied a Penalty?
According to analysis from “Archivo VAR” on X, the referee’s decision not to award a penalty was incorrect, and criticism was directed towards VAR officials.
The account stated that Vinícius bypassed Alavés defender Laguardia, who committed a clear foul inside the penalty area, and that referee Victor Garcia Verdugo did not consult VAR. They also noted that VAR official Gonzalez Fuertes failed to intervene.
Real Madrid TV also launched a strong attack on referee Verdugo, stating that the missed penalty call was “a disgrace” and questioning why VAR officials did not intervene. The channel referenced past comments made by Fuertes, who allegedly threatened Real Madrid during a press conference before the Copa del Rey final in April.
Fuertes, who no longer referees on the field and now works solely in VAR, reportedly stated they would “take action” against footage from Real Madrid TV, sparking outrage from the club’s management.
Controversial Asensio Challenge
Another controversial moment involved a challenge from Real Madrid defender Asensio on Alavés’ Lucas Boya, which prompted calls for a straight red card from the Alavés players.
However, “Archivo VAR” asserts that the incident did not warrant a direct red card, as Asensio was attempting to win the ball from Boya without intending to cause harm. They indicated that a yellow card would have been the appropriate response.
