Following a soldier’s injury earlier this week near the historically sensitive Prasat Ta Kwai temple,Thai authorities have discovered four additional landmines along the Thai-Cambodian border. The discovery, reported December 25, 2028, raises concerns about the purposeful placement of the devices and potential breaches of the international Ottawa Treaty, which prohibits the use of anti-personnel mines. Thailand has maintained a decades-long effort to clear legacy ordnance from past conflicts, and this incident threatens to destabilize those efforts and endanger both military and civilian populations in the region.
Thai authorities have discovered four additional landmines near the site where a soldier was injured earlier this week, raising concerns about intentional placement and potential violations of international treaties. The discovery underscores ongoing tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border and the dangers posed by landmines to both military personnel and civilians.
The Thai Army reported on December 25, 2028, that the additional PMN-2 anti-personnel mines were found by a bomb disposal unit investigating the area surrounding the initial incident near Prasat Ta Kwai temple. The mines were laid in a row, approximately 30 centimeters from where the soldier was wounded while conducting security operations.
According to Army Spokesperson Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvaree, the arrangement of the mines strongly suggests a deliberate attempt to harm anyone traveling through the area. “The evidence clearly indicates that Cambodian forces continue to use anti-personnel mines,” Suvaree stated. “This is a serious violation of international obligations under the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines, also known as the Ottawa Treaty, and a contravention of universal humanitarian principles.”
The Thai Army plans to compile all collected data and evidence and submit it to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for diplomatic action. They also intend to raise the issue on the international stage. The Army condemned the use of landmines in all circumstances as unacceptable in the modern world.
