Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced new financial assistance for Ukraine on Saturday during a meeting with visiting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

OTTAWA, December 27 – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney pledged an additional 2.5 billion Canadian dollars (approximately $1.83 billion USD) in support of Ukraine during a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, officials said Saturday.

The funding package, according to an official statement, includes resources intended to facilitate lending to Ukraine through the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as well as other debt relief and loan guarantee programs. The announcement comes as Ukraine continues to seek international financial support amid ongoing conflict.

The two leaders held bilateral talks in Halifax, Canada, to discuss the latest developments in ongoing peace negotiations. Prime Minister Carney reaffirmed Canada’s full support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Carney and Zelenskyy also participated in a call with European leaders to coordinate joint efforts toward Ukraine’s security and reconstruction, the statement added.

“Canada is committed to providing further support to Ukraine, not only to help bring an end to this war, but also to help the Ukrainian people recover and rebuild,” Carney said.

President Zelenskyy stopped in Halifax en route to Florida, where he is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss a resolution to the crisis in Ukraine.

Local media reports indicate Zelenskyy is expected to present Trump with a 20-point peace plan on Sunday, likely at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.
