Three Dead in Suspected Hantavirus Outbreak Aboard Dutch Cruise Ship
Three people have died and three others have fallen ill following a suspected hantavirus outbreak on a Dutch cruise ship, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The WHO reported that the virus has been confirmed in one of the three deceased passengers. The vessel was traveling between Argentina and Cape Verde, arriving at the latter destination on Saturday, May 2, 2026.
Emergency medical efforts are ongoing, with one of the sick passengers currently receiving intensive care in South Africa. The WHO stated it is coordinating with local authorities to facilitate the evacuation of the other two individuals who fell ill.
Hantaviruses are typically transmitted to humans via rodents. Depending on the variant, the infection can result in anything from asymptomatic cases to severe conditions, including acute pulmonary syndrome and hemorrhagic fever.
This incident underscores the persistent public health challenges associated with zoonotic disease transmission in the confined environments of international maritime travel.
