Pavol Regenda notched his first career NHL hat trick on Saturday, but the San Jose Sharks fell to the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-7 in a high-scoring contest. The Sharks’ offensive spark wasn’t enough to overcome a dominant performance from Tampa Bay, as both teams continued their seasons with this latest matchup.

Regenda, who has only appeared in four games this season, now has five goals on the year. His breakout performance provided a bright spot for San Jose despite the lopsided result.

Regenda opened the scoring for the Sharks, capitalizing on a two-minute penalty assessed to his fellow countryman, Erik Černák for hooking. The goal briefly narrowed the gap for San Jose.

He quickly had another opportunity to extend the lead, but was denied by Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy. Despite Regenda’s early impact, the first period ended with Tampa Bay ahead 3-1.

Regenda completed his hat trick in the final twenty minutes, but it proved to be a consolation goal as the Sharks ultimately lost 3-7.

In an earlier game on Saturday, the Pittsburgh Penguins continued their winning ways, defeating the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 to secure their fifth victory in the last six games.
