A historic Belgian venue, Kasteel van Saffelaere, has announced it will cease operations due to mounting financial pressures. The picturesque castle, located near Ghent, has hosted numerous events, including weddings and gatherings with prominent figures.
Owners Herman Windey and Petra Van Bockstal confirmed the difficult decision, stating, “Unfortunately, the story of Saffelaere Castle has come to an end, that is the reality. We have already informed couples who had reserved their special day there to look for a new location.” They added, “This is a decision that pains us, and we have made it with great regret.”
The castle began to face significant challenges with the onset of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, and a full recovery in event bookings has proven elusive. A shift in public preferences has also contributed to the downturn.
“People have discovered new ways to spend their free time. The number of lavish events is decreasing, as is the number of guests, a discrepancy that leads to an unsustainable situation,” the owners explained.
Rising labor costs, stemming from a widespread staffing shortage, further exacerbated the financial strain. Finding qualified personnel became increasingly difficult, driving up expenses.
Kasteel van Saffelaere, situated approximately twelve kilometers northeast of Ghent, has welcomed a number of notable guests over the years. Pianist Johan Stollz was a frequent visitor, and Ukrainian singer Maria Rakova recently performed at the venue.
