After being diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2023, Trude Drevland endured two years of demanding treatment – without the desired results. But following a successful operation in April of last year, Trude Drevland (78) received the news she’d been hoping for: she was cancer-free.
Though she no longer requires treatment, the former Bergen mayor and nurse continues to attend regular check-ups, as a precaution.
Following a CT scan in December, Trude was finally able to breathe a sigh of relief.
– It was a comprehensive X-ray examination, to see if there was any cancer remaining. But the findings were normal throughout my body – and that means I am cancer-free,” Trude told Se og Hør.
“A Euphoric Relief”
The vibrant personality has continued to live life as normally as possible after her operation, refusing to let worry define her days.
Her motto has been to live in the moment, enjoy everyday life, and look forward. But when she underwent the CT scan, she realized her body was living its “own” life – without her fully realizing it.

– I thought I had a relaxed attitude towards everything, and what the examination would show. But when I received the good news that I was cancer-free, I suddenly felt how tense I actually had been – because that’s when my body started to relax. I experienced a euphoric relief! Actually, I’ve been walking around with a constant anxiety, which I’ve kept at a distance,” Trude said afterward.

“Always an Optimist”
The cheerful personality has continued to live life as normally as possible after the operation, and hasn’t let her worries define her everyday life.
Her motto has been to live in the moment, enjoy life, and look ahead. Before Christmas, she invited some of her closest friends to celebrate the good health news.
The celebration took place at the prestigious Grand Hotel in Oslo.
Always Optimistic
Clairvoyant Lilli Bendriss (79) was among the friends who met for a pre-dinner gathering in Trude’s room before dinner. She praises her friend’s attitude towards life – and the challenges she faces.
– What Trude teaches us is that you should never give up, but rather try to see the positive in a difficult situation,” says Lilli.

– Because we all face challenges in life. It’s about how we take it – not how we have it. Trude’s attitude is that illness shouldn’t define her. She thinks, ‘I am Trude – I am not the illness – and I am strong!’
Lilli is impressed by her friend’s ability to live in the moment.
– You have no guarantee of many tomorrows, but you can live today. Because today is what you have. And that’s what Trude does. So she deals with what comes when it comes. That’s something we can all learn from,” she believes.
Former Oslo mayor Fabian Stang (70) also believes Trude serves as a role model. He has been open about his own health challenges, including depression following his recent divorce.
– She is proof that adversity must be met with enthusiasm and joy. Many would have given up if they had gone through as much as she has. But she has persevered, and is an incredible inspiration to all of us. When we struggle, she shows that if you want to – you can do it. Trude has an inner strength that is phenomenal,” Fabian emphasized.
