Former captain Rohit Sharma has publicly advocated for an aggressive spin strategy, suggesting a dual-spinner pairing of Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy. Sharma’s remarks, made during an appearance on JioCinema, highlight a potential shift from India’s traditional reliance on spin-pace combinations and offer insight into the tactical considerations facing the team’s management ahead of the tournament.

- Sharma discussed the challenges of facing potential opposition lineups.
Varun Chakravarthy’s emergence in T20 cricket has created competition for places, particularly for Kuldeep Yadav. Chakravarthy quickly established himself as a valuable asset with strong performances. India has typically favored a strategy of pairing a specialist spinner like Varun with an all-rounder, often utilizing Axar Patel or Washington Sundar. However, Sharma has a different vision.
“I think a combination where Kuldeep and Varun play together is something India needs in the T20 World Cup,” Sharma stated. He pointed to the duo’s ability to consistently take wickets and put pressure on opposing batsmen.
However, Sharma acknowledged that implementing this strategy won’t be easy. “If I were the captain, that’s what I would do,” he said. “If you want to play both Varun and Kuldeep, you can only play two pace bowlers, which is a big challenge.”
“The reason I say this is because they are both wicket-taking bowlers, and batsmen will find it difficult to read and counter them. I would definitely include them in the team,” Sharma explained during an appearance on JioCinema’s “Captain Rohit Sharma’s Road Map for the T20 World Cup.”
Sharma also detailed the potential difficulties of selecting Kuldeep, noting that it might require dropping a valuable pace bowler. Weather conditions, particularly dew, could also play a significant role. He believes the team management and current captain Suryakumar Yadav will ultimately make the best decision. India could potentially utilize three spinners depending on the circumstances.

“New Zealand T20 series showed how crucial dew can be. In February and March, most parts of the country experience significant dew, even in places like Mumbai where it’s not usually that cold. Ninety to ninety-five percent of Indian grounds will have dew, and that’s the challenge. So, the captain and team management need to decide whether to play three spinners,” Sharma added.
The strategic considerations come as India prepares for a crucial T20 World Cup campaign, aiming to build on their strong recent form and contend for the title. Sharma’s insights offer a glimpse into the tactical thinking surrounding team selection and the importance of adapting to varying conditions.
