Shubman Gill is reportedly set to miss the upcoming One Day International series against South Africa due to a neck injury sustained during the first Test in Kolkata. The injury to the opening batsman throws India’s ODI captaincy plans into question, with KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant now potential candidates to lead the side. The Indian Cricket Control Board (BCCI) is scheduled to hold a selection meeting in Mumbai on November 22 to determine the team composition and captaincy.

The three-match ODI series between India and South Africa is slated to begin November 30 in Ranchi. The second ODI will be played December 3 in Raipur, and the final match will take place December 6 in Visakhapatnam.

Sources indicate the captaincy decision is now largely between Rahul and Pant, also factoring in the absence of Shreyas Iyer, who is sidelined with an injury to his radial artery.

Gill sustained the injury on the second day of the Kolkata Test against South Africa. While attempting a slog-sweep against Simon Harmer, he experienced a whip-lash type impact and immediately clutched at his neck. The Indian physio rushed to assist, and Gill retired hurt after facing just three balls. His condition appeared more serious as he was stretchered off the field with a cervical collar providing support.

Following the incident, Gill underwent further medical examination and consulted with Dr. Abhay Nene, a spinal specialist in Mumbai, on November 22. He received an injection to alleviate his symptoms and has been advised to take complete rest for a period of time before resuming training. As a result, he has been ruled out of the second Test in Guwahati.

With Gill unavailable, vice-captain Rishabh Pant led India in the second Test in Guwahati, where the team managed to contain South Africa to 247 for 6 at the close of play on the first day. Kuldeep Yadav claimed three crucial wickets, keeping India in a balanced position in the match.

Gill was recently appointed India’s ODI captain for the October series against Australia, replacing Rohit Sharma. India lost that series 2-1, and the upcoming tour of South Africa represented an opportunity for Gill to solidify his position as captain and gain experience in a leadership role. This injury throws those plans into uncertainty.
