Former heavyweight contender Andrzej Wawrzyk is facing potential deportation from the United States after a series of legal issues. The Polish boxer was arrested in Sarasota County, Florida, in December 2025 on charges of shoplifting, possession of burglary tools, and resisting arrest.

The arrest comes after a prior incident in August 2023, when Wawrzyk was detained in Chicago for allegedly stealing merchandise valued at over $300. He was released after a night in custody, but the incident remained on record. More details on the Chicago arrest can be found here.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed that Wawrzyk’s case has been ongoing. ICE officials revealed that the boxer has overstayed his authorized stay in the U.S. by more than two years, compounding his legal troubles.

“Andrzej Wawrzyk, an unlawfully present Polish national, was arrested by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office for possession of shoplifting devices, petty theft, and resisting arrest during the arrest process,” ICE spokesperson Christopher Meares told reporters.

“Wawrzyk was admitted to the United States on July 31, 2023, as a temporary visitor with authorization to remain until September 20, 2023. He has remained in the U.S. for over two years beyond his permitted stay, violating federal law. ICE has placed a detainer on Wawrzyk while he awaits local prosecution,” Meares added.

ICE also noted that individuals facing deportation can explore options for self-deportation, with the U.S. government offering financial assistance in some cases. However, being apprehended by ICE can jeopardize future eligibility for legal entry into the country.

Wawrzyk, who holds a professional boxing record of 34-5, last fought in February 2025, suffering a third-round TKO loss to Damian Knyba in Newark, New Jersey. The defeat marked a setback for the Polish fighter, who had previously challenged for the WBA Regular heavyweight title.
