Romanian Mayor Faces Corruption Probe Over Alleged Favoritism

Bucharest Mayor Robert Negoiță is under investigation by Romania’s National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) following searches at his home and the Sector 3 City Hall. The probe centers around allegations that public funds were used to construct a road for his brother, a real estate developer.

The DNA carried out searches in 11 locations as part of the investigation, according to reports. Authorities are examining potential irregularities in construction and paving projects, specifically instances where work was carried out without the necessary legal documentation.

Negoiță responded to the investigation, stating, “We cannot do our job legally.” This comes after initial reports of the searches sparked public interest in the case.

The mayor has denied the accusations, claiming he did not commission any public road construction for his brother. “I did not build any public road for my brother,” Negoiță stated.

The investigation highlights the ongoing efforts to combat corruption within Romanian politics. The case is likely to draw significant media attention, given Negoiță’s prominent position as a city mayor.
