According to reports, the car veered off the N33 and came to rest against a fence bordering a body of water. Police and ambulance personnel were dispatched to the scene to assist the three occupants of the vehicle. The extent of any injuries is currently unknown.
Earlier on Monday, emergency responders also dealt with a collision at the intersection of Rijksweg and Pop Dijkemaweg in Groningen. Both vehicles involved were assessed by ambulance crews, though details regarding injuries were not immediately available.
Train service between Groningen and Zuidbroek was temporarily suspended earlier in the day due to an unrelated incident, but was restored by 9:15 a.m. Local time.
These incidents reach as the province of Groningen, in collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and Rijkswaterstaat, continues perform to improve the N33 between Zuidbroek and Eemshaven. The N33 improvement project is divided into two phases: N33 midden (Zuidbroek – Appingedam) and N33 Noord (Appingedam – Eemshaven). Rijkswaterstaat is also conducting maintenance on the roadway.
On February 17, 2026, Rijkswaterstaat announced measures to improve traffic safety on the N33. The N33 was also closed between Appingedam and Eemshaven from October 27 to November 7, 2025, for work. Another closure occurred between Assen and Siddeburen from September 5 to 8, 2025, for maintenance.
