A compelling rumor is circulating within the gaming world, originating from industry insider Jeff Grubb.
During the latest episode of the Game Mess Decides podcast, Grubb revealed that Polyphony Digital reportedly has a working version of its flagship title, Gran Turismo 7, running on developer kits for Nintendo’s next-generation Switch console. Although the prospect of racing on Nintendo hardware excites fans of hybrid gaming, Grubb cautioned that the game’s functionality on the new Nintendo platform doesn’t guarantee a retail release.
The leaker emphasized that he doesn’t believe a GT7 port for the Switch 2 is currently in Sony’s publishing plans. Instead, it appears to be a technical demonstration and evidence of Polyphony Digital experimenting with the new Nintendo architecture. The industry has seen similar instances before, such as the technological demo of Gears of War 3 running on PlayStation 3, which remained within Epic Games’ laboratories.
Experts suggest these tests may have a secondary purpose tied to Sony’s own plans. Given reports that PlayStation is allegedly developing a powerful handheld console, the team behind Gran Turismo needs to understand how their proprietary engine performs on mobile chipsets comparable to what Nintendo will offer. Optimizing the game for “Switch 2” could therefore serve as a testing ground, potentially enabling a fully-fledged, native GT7 experience on a future PlayStation device.
Regardless of Sony’s intentions, the news that the Switch 2 is capable of running a complex simulator like Gran Turismo 7 has sparked considerable excitement among gamers regarding the new Big N console’s processing power.
