BMW Recalls Hundreds of Thousands of Vehicles Globally Due to Fire Risk

German automaker BMW is conducting another global recall affecting hundreds of thousands of vehicles due to potential fire hazards, according to recent reports. This latest action follows a previous recall announced several weeks ago, and underscores ongoing quality control efforts within the automotive industry.

The recall, impacting approximately 337,374 vehicles, centers on models produced between June 9, 2022, and December 5, 2025, including the i5, 5-Series, M5, 7-Series, and i7. The German transport authority, KBA, has indicated that improper cable routing within the cockpit could lead to damage during microfilter replacement, potentially causing short circuits and, in severe cases, smoke or fire.

A BMW spokesperson stated to the German press agency dpa that the recall is a precautionary measure, and that no accidents have been linked to the identified defect.

This recall builds on a previous announcement from February 11, 2026, where BMW initiated a recall of hundreds of thousands of vehicles – including several thousand in Belgium – due to potential issues with the magnetic switch in the starter motor. That earlier recall affected vehicles built between July 2020 and July 2022, spanning the 2-Series Coupe, various 3-, 4-, and 5-Series models, the 6-Series Gran Turismo, the 7-Series, X4, X5, X6, and Z4. The company advised owners not to abandon vehicles unattended with the engine running, as a faulty switch could lead to overheating and potentially a fire.

In Belgium, a spokesperson for BMW, Jeroen Lissens, confirmed that several thousand vehicles are affected by the latest recall, adding that customers have already been notified and starter motors have been replaced in approximately half of the cases. Affected customers are currently permitted to continue using their vehicles.

BMW owners can check if their vehicle is subject to recall by verifying if the chassis number contains 0012650600, 0012660600, 0012670600, or 0012680600.

The repeated recall actions highlight the increasing scrutiny on automotive safety standards and the potential financial implications for manufacturers when defects are identified.
