Consuming added sugars, such as sweets and sugar-rich meals, before bedtime may lead to long-term increases in blood pressure, according to recent studies.

Research indicates that eating sugary foods before sleep can be detrimental to health. When consumed, carbohydrates are rapidly converted into glucose, which stimulates the pancreas to release insulin.

Elevated insulin levels can cause sodium retention and an increase in blood volume, subsequently raising blood pressure. It also activates the sympathetic nervous system, which increases heart rate, researchers found.

Sugars impact blood vessels; fructose increases uric acid levels in the blood, reducing the production of nitric oxide—a gas that helps blood vessels dilate. A deficiency in nitric oxide can lead to high blood pressure and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
