WhatsApp Ads: Coming to Europe & Netherlands – Pay or See Ads

WhatsApp has begun rolling out advertisements to users across Europe, marking a significant shift for the messaging platform. The introduction of ads, previously tested in other regions, comes after a delay attributed to privacy reviews with Irish regulators, according to reports.

The advertisements will initially appear within the “Updates” tab, displayed as promoted channels. Users will also encounter ads as Status updates, similar to the Stories format on Instagram. This move represents a new revenue stream for WhatsApp, as the platform explores ways to monetize its massive user base.

The rollout is being implemented in phases, with some users already seeing advertisements while others will gain access over time. WhatsApp announced the expansion via social media, stating that the ads are intended to help users discover specific businesses.

Currently, advertisements are not appearing within individual chat threads, but the company has not ruled out exploring this possibility in the future. WhatsApp will reportedly monitor ad engagement to optimize placement and frequency.

Alongside the introduction of advertisements, WhatsApp is also launching a premium subscription option that will allow users to remove ads from their experience. TechPulse reports that this subscription model offers a way for users to opt out of seeing advertisements within the app.

The company has emphasized that user conversations will not be used to personalize advertisements. Instead, ad targeting will rely on location (country), language settings, and user interactions with the ads themselves. ictmagazine.nl notes that this approach aims to balance personalization with user privacy.

The move to introduce ads in Europe was initially postponed until 2026 following discussions with the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC). This delay allowed European privacy watchdogs to assess whether the advertising model complies with relevant data protection laws, particularly regarding the use of data shared between WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram. NU.nl details this regulatory process.

Users now have the ability to block specific advertisers through a menu option, preventing those companies’ ads from appearing in their Updates tab. This feature provides users with some control over the advertisements they see within the platform.
