While new cars typically depreciate quickly after purchase, some models experience a particularly dramatic loss in value. A new analysis by iSeeCars examined which vehicles lose the largest portion of their value after five years, and which ones hold their price above average. The study reveals that luxury cars and electric vehicles tend to depreciate the most.

According to data from the U.S. Market, the Jaguar I-Pace sees the largest value drop, losing 72.2 percent of its value after five years – an average loss of $51,953 compared to the original purchase price. The BMW 7 Series ranks second, depreciating by 67.1 percent, or approximately $65,249, over the same period. The Tesla Model S follows closely behind with a 65.2 percent decline in value.

Which Cars Retain Their Value

However, some cars maintain their value significantly better than most competitors. The Porsche 911 leads the pack, losing only 19.5 percent of its value after five years, equating to roughly $24,428. The Porsche 718 Cayman closely follows with a depreciation of 21.8 percent. The Toyota Tacoma achieves the third-best result, with a value loss of around 26 percent.

Luxury and Electric Vehicles See the Biggest Drops

– SUVs and large sedans typically accept the biggest hit
– Porsche is among the brands with the best results

If you’re selecting a new vehicle with resale in mind, focusing on models with slower depreciation rates makes sense. The Porsche 911 or Toyota Tacoma are reliable choices while luxury electric vehicles and large SUVs often prove to be less advantageous choices when it comes time to sell.
