Toulouse Nightlife: How Clubs Have Evolved & Survived

l’essentiel Ivo Danaf, owner of the Toulouse nightclub Purple since its opening in 2001, has witnessed over two decades of change in the nightlife industry. He discusses how clubs have had to reinvent themselves to survive amidst increasing competition from bars, stricter regulations, and the rise of social media, while remaining a cornerstone of the city’s entertainment scene.

How has the world of nightclubs evolved over the past thirty years?
The change has been radical. In the late 80s, clubs would open at 10 PM and be full by 10:30 PM. People came directly to dance. There weren’t as many alternatives. Then bars and restaurants with a lively atmosphere started appearing. Evenings began later, and nightlife became more fragmented. Many discotheques could no longer survive operating only between 2 AM and 4 AM.

Has the number of establishments really decreased?
Yes. In the 90s, France had nearly 10,000 discotheques. Today, We find around 2,500 left. That’s a considerable decline. The business model has become more fragile, and competition from festive bars has profoundly changed habits.

Were other factors involved?
The fight against drunk driving had a significant impact, especially for establishments located on the outskirts of town. Controls were strengthened, but nighttime transportation didn’t always adapt. Many customers hesitated to drive to proceed out.

What role did social media play?
They changed everything. Before, we distributed flyers and communicated in the local press. Today, you don’t exist without Instagram or TikTok. Customers also go out to share their evening online. Image has become central.

Are young people still going out to party?
Yes, of course. Toulouse is a large university city, so naturally festive. Young people still go out, but they are more selective and more attentive to the atmosphere offered.

How do you stay attractive today?
You have to offer a real experience: themed evenings, a tailored program, a well-executed staging. The nightclub can no longer be just a place to dance. It must become a unique moment. The forms change, but the demand to reach together will never disappear.
