A prominent technology investor is forecasting a dramatic reshaping of the global economy as artificial intelligence rapidly advances. Vinod Khosla, an early investor in companies like OpenAI, Square, and DoorDash, believes AI could automate up to 80% of jobs by 2030, potentially ushering in an era of unprecedented abundance.
“Starting in about 2030 – over four years from now – 80% of all jobs will be capable of being done by an artificial intelligence,” Khosla stated, according to Fortune. This shift, while potentially displacing a significant portion of the human workforce, could similarly lead to dramatically lower prices for goods and services.
Khosla highlighted the potential economic impact, noting that $15 trillion of U.S. GDP currently represents labor costs. “What happens when all labor is free? 15 trillion dollars of the U.S. GDP represents labor, and those 15 trillion dollars will largely disappear. This is a highly deflationary economy,” he explained. However, he anticipates that the increased availability of goods and services, driven by AI and robotics, will create significant abundance, with $30,000 – or even $10,000 – potentially having the purchasing power of $100,000 today by 2040.
The prediction aligns with similar forecasts from other tech leaders. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, previously stated that work could become optional within the next 10–20 years, with money potentially losing its relevance due to the rise of AI and robotics, as reported by Antena3. Musk has often likened having a job to maintaining a vegetable garden as a hobby.
His vision involves robots outnumbering the human population and providing essential services, such as healthcare, while the necessitate for traditional savings and pensions diminishes. The forecasts are prompting discussion about the future of work and the potential need for economic adjustments.
