Arizona Cardinals running back James Conner has agreed to a revised contract to remain with the team for the 2026 season, according to reports. The move avoids a potential release for cap savings and ensures Conner will continue to be a key part of the Cardinals’ offense.

The reworked deal was necessary as Conner was originally scheduled to earn $6.39 million in 2026, carrying a $9.83 million cap hit. Details of the revised contract terms were not immediately disclosed.

Conner, who will turn 31 on May 5, faced an injury-shortened 2025 season, appearing in only three games due to an ankle injury sustained in Week 3. Despite the setback, the Cardinals clearly value his contributions when healthy.

Prior to the injury, Conner had established himself as a consistent performer for Arizona, achieving consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons in 2024, and 2025. He finished last season with 95 rushing yards.

The nine-year NFL veteran signed a two-year extension with the Cardinals in late 2024 and has rushed for a total of 6,065 yards with 289 receptions for 2,255 yards throughout his career. He has 72 total touchdowns – 60 rushing and 12 receiving. The agreement to keep Conner in Arizona underscores the team’s commitment to its running game.

In addition to Conner’s contract rework, the Cardinals also reached agreements with cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting and punter Blake Gillikin to return for the 2026 season, NFL.com reported. Murphy-Bunting missed the entire 2025 season with a knee injury, while Gillikin signed a one-year deal worth up to $2.65 million. Kicker Chad Ryland is also signing a one-year deal with the Cardinals.
