Global trade growth is expected to slow significantly if energy prices continue their upward trajectory. That’s according to a latest report released Thursday by the World Trade Organization (WTO). Last year, merchandise trade increased by 4.6%, despite the tariffs imposed during the Trump administration. However, growth this year is now projected to be limited to just 1.4%.
“Rising energy prices increase risks to global trade, with potential repercussions for food security and cost pressures for consumers and businesses,” warned WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on Thursday. The concerns were echoed Friday by Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency (IEA), who told the Financial Times that the volume of gas supply disruptions is double that experienced by Europe from Russia in 2022, and oil supply losses exceed those seen during the 1970s oil shocks.
