Ryan Gosling’s ‘Project Hail Mary’ Soars to Box Office Success
Ryan Gosling’s new sci-fi epic, “Project Hail Mary,” has launched to a stellar opening weekend, earning $80.5 million in North America. The film’s performance marks the best debut for Amazon MGM Studios and the strongest opening for a non-franchise film since “Oppenheimer,” signaling a strong draw for original, star-driven stories in a competitive market.
Globally, “Project Hail Mary” has already grossed $140.9 million (£122m), making it the biggest box office debut of 2026 so far. The film follows a former science teacher, played by Gosling, tasked with saving the world from extinction.
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, known for their work on “21 Jump Street” and “The Lego Movie,” the movie is based on the best-selling novel by Andy Weir, author of “The Martian.” According to a statement from Amazon MGM’s distribution boss Kevin Wilson, the novel “gave them a powerful foundation” before the directors “created a visually stunning, heart-gripping film.”
Wilson similarly praised Gosling, stating he is “a singular star that has the massive global appeal and charisma to anchor a story like this.”
The film premiered in London on March 9, 2026, and officially released in the United States on March 20, 2026, according to Wikipedia. “Project Hail Mary” has already become the ninth highest-grossing film of 2026.
Gosling himself spoke about the importance of humor in the film, explaining, “That’s part of the reason why I wanted to produce [this film], because I felt like I needed to create an environment where these things could co-exist.”
